Carlo Mollino Theatre chairs 1951

Rai Auditorium Seats, Carlo Mollino, Italy, 1951

A pair of chairs from the collaborative project between Carlo Mollino and Aldo Morbelli, The Theatre Rai di Torino in 1951. At some point in the past 20 years the chairs were removed from the building and were sold in rows of three and six. Rows aren’t always suitable for the home and so we have a pair of separate chairs.

Carlo Mollino, known for racing cars, designing furniture and photographing nude ladies certainly has a style that is like no other. Although his furniture can be looked at as being typically Italian and of the time, he blurs the barrier between sculpture and furniture. The shape of the chair is organic at the same time as being mass-produced – sitting on a room of over 1000 others. A true piece of history.

Condition is good – the chairs are solid and comfortable. The brass is worn at the feet. Seat numbers in intact.

Materials:

Brass, velvet
