2x Hammock Armchair no. 17, Pierre Dariel, 1923

A pair of chairs made by renowned French carpenter and furniture maker, Pierre Dariel (dates unknown). Dariel famously collaborated with Robert Mallet-Stevens (1886 – 1945) for his project Villa Noailles, Hyères, France in 1923-27. What is important to note here is the amount of varying models there are of this chair, which only goes to illustrate the custom nature of the pieces which were most likely made to order.

Mallet-Stevens would most likely have commissioned Dariel to make a very similar chair to the Hammock Armchair no. 17 for his Villa Noailles project. Almost one hundred years old the chairs are made from solid oak with straight lengths of wood, square-dowel joints, chamfered feet, and varying options for tautness/ heights of the lilac sling seats.

Condition:

Structurally restored, and surface stripped down to original paint work: worn paint and surfaces with colour-matched touching up. New cotton/linen hammock.
