Coat rack 109, Alvar Aalto, Artek, 1936

The rounded-triangle shaped plywood brackets were not just developed for use on shelves. As with other standardised components developed by Artek, the bracket could be used for various pieces, including a desk, a credenza, and this coat rack.

It is unusual to see this model with the nickel-plated rail on the front. The only other example being on view at the Paimio Sanitorium – the first project for which the Aaltos were commissioned to design everything, from building to escutcheons. We’re not entirely convinced that this is an original detail in the Sanitorium, as the standard model wasn’t on the market until 1936. Nonetheless it is an early production version, as suggested by the deep colour and wear.
