2x “no. VIII” Dining chairs, Den Haagse School, attr. L.O.V. Oosterbeek, 1920s

A pair of red painted “no. VIII” chairs from “de Nieuwe Haagse School” (The New Hague School), c. 1922-24. The style can be characterised by a reduction of the decoration that we saw from the Amsterdam School, and a heavy influence of the low, straight lines of Frank Lloyd Wright. We are attributing the chairs to either the furniture company H. Pander & Sons (Holland’s largest interior design firm at the time), or the idealistic L.O.V. Oosterbeek Furniture factory who sought to enhance the living standards of the working class. One architect and interior designer who worked on designs for both companies, Hendrik Wouda (1885 – 1946), encouraged the use of vivid but carefully selected colour – as demonstrated in these low back dining chairs.
